New theme
Published:
It has been quite a time since I last wrote here. One reason is that I was pretty unhappy with the old theme. It looked nice and minimal, but was already unmaintained at the time I chose it. Of course I forked it to take maintenance over, but when I peeked under the hood I realized that all the simplicity was entirely superficial. 7300 lines of CSS are not my definition of minimal. To be fair, the author never claimed minimality, that was entirely my own misconception.
The gargantuan pile of CSS was nothing I was keen to take over, and coupled with lots of social and analytics integrations I don’t like it just seemed like a bad fit. This vacation I finally sat down and created a theme on my own, despite the Hugo documentation being a bit lacking on the basics. For the start, I decided to forego most visual styling, just tweaked the layout a bit. For now, I have 32 lines of CSS, and I am pretty happy with that. One exception is that I prefer the Bitter font over the generic sans serif, because I think it looks really slick. But I will not force it on visitors by using webfonts, because I really dislike those.
The theme is hosted on sourcehut and I am not really interested in advertising it on the Hugo themes site.
With the theme out of the way, I hope to write more regularly here.
